New “Reef Awareness” Signs Installed at Kam II and Kalama Park

Mahalo to our volunteers and sponsors for installing more beautiful and informative ”Reef Awareness/Reef Etiquette” signs in South Maui. One of the signs graces the entrance to Kam II beach park . Two additional Reef Awareness signs have been installed at Kalama Park. One near each end of the park along the new one mile pedestrian walking trail. Both signs were installed by KCA volunteers with Parks Dept permission. The install crew was careful to allow access to the signs even during the construction process since a line formed almost immediately at each sign as visitors and residents alike scrambled to read the important information. Mahalo to all involved in this coral reef awareness campaign. Special mahalo to the corporate and individual sponsors that purchased the signs through the KCA sponsorship.

Reef Celebration & Membership Drive on November 1st Big Success

KCA kicked off November with a celebration, as over 200 Mauians participated in a joyful evening at the Kihei Youth Center’s facility at Kenolio Park with a multi faceted luau featuring the concept of helping to preserve our coral reef systems along the South Maui shoreline, with the announcement that 2-3 more “reef etiquette” signs will be donated & installed at appropriate sights, the Kihei Boat Ramp and Kamaole Beach Park II, and Kalama Park joining the first one at Kamaole Beach Park III.

We have a long list to express our mahalo, beginning with our host, the Kihei Youth Center, and the blessing provided by Kimokeo Kapahulehua, as well as the management and direction Lehua Huddleston-Hafoka’and her extraordinary team.

Blind Willey’s lively music kept the crowd on its feet from beginning to end and beyond of our event, giving all of us an enjoyable experience

Generous community business throughout South Maui provided the prizes for the lucky winners: Antonio’s, Aroma D’Italia Ristorante, Fred’s Mexican Café, Maui Coast hotel, Moose McGillycuddy’s, Pacific Whale Foundation, Roy’s Kihei, Safeway, Stellas Blues Café and the Greek Bistro.

KCA has placed the “Coral Reef” sign by the life guard tower at KAM III in an effort to educate those visiting our ocean about the need to care for our coral reefs, as they have a vital impact on our environment. The blessing was on Thursday, May 15 at KAM III by life guard tower.
